The game has garnered so much negative press that the publisher, Konami, has dropped it like a proverbial hot potato, leaving developer Atomic Games in a precarious position.
  2. Six Days In Fallujah, a game based on the recent war in Iraq, was deemed too controversial by its publishers Konami.

Oh videogames, when will you ever learn that you're not supposed to be about things? Your restrictions are thus: jumping on mushrooms, hitting a ball, and racing. But not racing to anywhere or from anything. Will you please control yourselves?

Six Days in Fallujah is a new third person shooter experience that puts the player in the center of the largest urban military operation in four decades.

Six Days In Fallujah is Konami's gaming interpretation of the gruesome 2004 battle in which 38 US troops, and 1200 insurgents were killed. Vbsedit license number. Made by Atomic Games, most recently known for the Close Combat games, it's a squad-based tactical third-person game, designed to recreate the atmosphere and experiences of the soldiers who fought there four and a half years ago. Please welcome The Daily Mail.

Working with soldiers who fought in the conflict, Atomic are at pains to express their intention to make a game that's informative as well as entertaining. Atomic President, Peter Tamte, told the LA Times,

'For us, the challenge was how do you present the horrors of war in a game that is also entertaining, but also gives people insight into a historical situation in a way that only a video game can provide? Our goal is to give people that insight, of what it's like to be a Marine during that event, what it's like to be a civilian in the city and what it's like to be an insurgent.'

His comments were accompanied by those of Mike Ergo, a 26 year old former soldier who had fought in Fallujah, now studying at Berkeley,

'Video games can communicate the intensity and the gravity of war to an audience who wouldn't necessarily be watching the History Channel or reading about this in the classroom. In an age when everyone's always online or playing games, people's imaginations aren't what they were, sadly. For this group, books may not convey the same level of intensity and chaos of war that a game can.'

A dozen marines from the battle are interviewed during the game, their comments appearing throughout the action. It would appear Atomic either genuinely want to tell their stories, or genuinely want to appear like they do. Importantly, they're also stating they want to make a game that's entertaining to play, rather than waving the worthy stick too wildly. Of course, others are not so happy.

There's no intentions to take sides here. I've really not considered my own thoughts on this game, and whether it's appropriate. It's much more interesting at this stage to report how others are reacting. But the Daily Mail makes it hard to remain balanced when they open their report with utter nonsense.

Immediately describing it as a 'survival horror' game, they then going on to announce which platforms the game will be coming out for, despite none being given by the developers. It's not an auspicious start.

'But a highly-decorated British Army colonel and the father of a lance corporal killed in action in Iraq have slammed the game – and called for it to be banned.'

There's an important thing to note here. Reg Keys didn't find out about this game when he was browsing the gaming news sites last night. He was likely called by the paper because they had his number on file as someone who's kid had died. A kid who died in 2003, a year before the battle in question. Keys goes on to make an interesting point, Avengers endgame subtitles srt.

'It's entirely possible that Muslim families will buy the game, and for them it may prove particularly harrowing.'

Sadly he then goes on to add,

'Even worse, it could end up in the hands of a fanatical young Muslim and incite him to consider some form of retaliation or retribution. He could use it to get worked up and want to really ‘finish the game'.'

Keys' comments are understandable for a man whose son died. Which then of course asks the question, is there a real reason to challenge the existence of this game? The Mail also got comments from former Col. Tim Collins OBE, who also condemned the existence of the game, mainly for being 'too soon'.

'It's much too soon to start making video games about a war that's still going on, and an extremely flippant response to one of the most important events in modern history. ‘It's particularly insensitive given what happened in Fallujah, and I will certainly oppose the release of this game.'

Where he reads this flippancy is slightly mysterious, unless he believes that gaming as a medium is flippant. An interesting perspective. But the 'too soon' asks more useful questions.

The Call of Duty and Medal of Honour Second World War games have always gone to great lengths to include historical accuracy, alongside blowing shit up. And while many complain about the ubiquity of WW2 gaming, the papers rarely get involved due to its being 'crass'. Vietnam is also apparently acceptable gaming fodder, with no mainstream reaction to the horrendously awful recent Shellshock 2, and its Vietnam-vs-zombies storyline. Is there an appropriate length of time before a global event or battle becomes acceptable for gaming material? We are now becoming swamped by Iraq War movies, books and television programmes. But there's just something about gaming that causes many to declare it unacceptable. It's the word 'entertainment'. A word that people can conveniently forget when it comes to films, books and television, where of course were they not entertaining, they'd certainly never have been funded nor made. Still, gaming is different – but is it too different? And what about those many soldiers who have asked to have their stories told by this game? Let us know your perspective.

Since the very beginning of video games, the industry has spawned many controversies as the market slowly crept into some pretty mature subjects, gaining attention from many worried politicians and the ‘furiosity' of the inflamed media as they kept on blaming the video game industry as one of the main causes for the acts of violence and bad behaviour that have been happening in the world today. So now we're here to bring you the ‘5 Biggest controversies ever in the history of gaming', so strap on tight folks, this is going to be one hell of a ridiculous ride!

5. Custer's Revenge

Released on 13th October 1982 for the Atari 2600, Custer's Revenge follows the character with the name of Custer, represented as a man wearing nothing but cavalry hat, boots and a bandana accompanied with the sight of a visible erection. His only goal was to have sex with a Native American woman that was tied to a pole. Just by listening to the soul purpose of the game, you know that this was going to be one helluva' controversial game…. and so it was.

Shortly after the game's release, it quickly gained infamy, obtaining many negative responses from angry customers and women's rights activists. Hilariously, the front cover on the sealed package for Custer's Revenge even went on to state 'NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS' with the game's literature also stating 'if the kids catch you and should ask, tell them Custer and the maiden are just dancing', because that's what dancing looks like…

Custer's Revenge continued to receive large amounts of criticism from various Women's Rights groups and Native American spokespersons, leading to Atari themselves attempting to sue the game makers.

4. Night Trap

Night Trap, released on October 15, 1992 was a game that was shrouded with angry reception from media outlets to politicians alike. The game was based around a group of young teenage women who decide to stay at Mr. and Mrs. Martin's house for the night as you (the player) watch over them through 8 hidden cameras that are scattered in 8 different locations throughout the house. Your job is to protect these girls with the traps laid in each room from the enemy, the ‘Augers'. If you fail to do so, you are left with a bloodless murder sequence. Due to these 'violent' scenes, the game has been heavily criticized and battered on by the media and was cited as an ‘encouragement to trap and kill women' which then lead to the removal of the CD versions of the game from the two largest toy store chains in America, Toys 'R' Us and Kay-Bee Toys.

3. Wolfenstein 3D Nazi Content

Wolfenstein 3D was and is still currently known as the 'Grandfather of all shooters' as it established the fast-paced action and technical prowess commonly expected in the genre and increased the genre's popularity. Yet, little did people know the ongoing resentment that surrounded the game in it's early days of release. The game's use of Nazi symbols, including the swastika and the Nazi Party‘s anthem 'Horst-Wessel-Lied' as theme music lead to the withdrawal of sale from Germany despite it's portrayal as Nazi's as the enemy and Hitler being the main antagonist.

The SNES version of the game was then edited due to concerns from Nintendo of America. All the swastikas and Nazi references were removed and Hitler (The boss) was renamed 'Staatmeister' and his mustache was removed also. Funny story eh?

Six Days in Fallujah, an unreleased historical third-person shooter created by Atomic Games was met with heavy criticism from British war veterans and peace groups shortly after the official announcement of the game in 2009 due to the background surrounding it. The game follows a squad of U.S Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), fighting in the Second Battle of Fallujah over the span of six days in November 2004. Reg Keys, father of slain Royal Military Police Lance Corporal Thomas Keys stated that glorifying the horrific event demonstrated very poor judgement and bad taste. Tim Collins, a former lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment said that he would also oppose against the game's release. Not long after in April 27, 2009, Konami dropped it's role as publisher due to the controversial nature of the game.

1.Modern Warfare 2: ‘No Russian' outrage

7 Days In Fallujah

'No Russian' is the fourth mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The mission takes place in Zakhaev International Airport. The mission sees the player take part in a massacre of hundreds of civilians thus making it one of the most controversial levels in gaming of all time. The mission had been removed from the Russian PC version of the game, modified in Japan and Germany for players to receive a 'Game over' if they killed a civilian and has been criticized in many other countries due to the violence surrounding the level.
